Introduction
In operation · testing towards uncrewed operation

Yara Birkeland is a collaborative project between several actors, where Kongsberg Maritime is responsible for the development and delivery of all newly developed technology on the ship. The vessel is operated by Massterly.

The vessel's function

The zero-emission vessel transports mineral fertilizer from Yara's production plant in Porsgrunn, Norway to the regional export port in Brevik. It started operation in April 2022 and has been tested in various conditions, along with shore infrastructure for automated mooring, charging, loading and unloading.

Massterly's delivery
  • 01Ship management and operation of the vessel
  • 02Newbuilding supervision at the Brattvåg yard (from 2020)
  • 03Planned uncrewed operation monitored from the Remote Operations Centre in Horten, after a testing period with limited crew onboard
  • 04Part of the Chief2Shore three-vessel trial from February 2026
